Wizarding World Harry Potter Birthday Party

Harry Potter Party Details:

This is what Katie shared about the party- “Snitches, owls, wands, potions, and a dash of Quidditch–all very magical necessities for an unforgettable Harry Potter Birthday Party. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a truly remarkable place, and bringing a little bit of that world into ours makes for an enchanting good time. I recently had the opportunity to create one of these spellbinding parties for my daughter’s friend Hannah, and I had a blast. So what’s the first thing that needs to be done for an authentic Harry Potter party? Sorting, of course! Each guest needed to be sorted into their proper house (can’t have Slytherins ending up in Gryffindor, you know). Each guest received a black cape and a tie bearing the colors of their assigned house.

Wand Selection

I created “class schedules” as a sort of itinerary for the party. Next on the schedule was a visit to Ollivander’s Wand Shop. Each budding little witch and wizard chose a wand–or the wand chose them, as the story goes–and had loads of fun painting them. I enjoyed putting together special wand boxes. They had black spray paint, velvet fabric, and online print outs for that authentic wizarding look. The next stop on our class schedule was the Owl Post, where the guests wrote letters to family members or friends with a white feather pen (resembling feathers from Hedwig, Harry’s pet snowy owl–the birthday girl is a huge fan of Hedwig’s!).

Potions and Herbology

Next up–Potions Class. This stop was a huge hit. Guests mixed up their own potion with bowls of vinegar (I prefilled these ahead of time) and a little stirring stick. After adding their choice of food coloring, they scooped in a bit of magic powder (baking soda) into their bowl and to everyone’s delight, the potions foamed and fizzled! I added to the effect by using a pot of dry ice in the background. Following Potions Class, we made our way to Herbology. At this stop, each guest planted a Beastly Bean–this fantastically funny plant causes belching.

Quidditch

Next, we moved out to the back yard to get out some wiggles with–you guessed it! A friendly game of Quidditch. We all know you can’t have a game of Quidditch without the coveted golden snitch–I made this using a foam ball sprayed with gold paint and adorned with a few feathers. The guests searched for the golden snitch to finish off the marvelous game. We wrapped up our schedules in the Grand Hall for refreshments. I frosted a vanilla cake in Harry Potter colors and got creative with some fondant, adding details like eye glasses, a wand, a spell book, and a scarf. Since I knew the birthday girl adores Hedwig, I couldn’t resist making some adorable snowy owl cupcakes to make her day extra special.

Movie Fun

We finished off the perfect party with a showing of the Harry Potter movie. By the time the movie was over, the guests’ wands were dry and they enjoyed casting spells from spell books I made with felt and paper (I found the creative spells online). Planning this party was a whole lot of fun for me, and I hope the birthday girl had just as much fun celebrating. A lot of detail went into this special day, and I hope that she will cherish these memories for many years to come.” Magical madness found in this Circus + Magic Birthday Party and this Magical Magic Party!
