Vintage Garage Party Details:This is what Stephanie said about planning/styling the party- “There are so many wonderful first birthday themes out there to sift through and decide on but my goal was to find a unique theme that I, personally, hadn’t seen done. With that in mind, I settled on a vintage “garage” theme for my son’s first birthday. Instead of a generic backdrop, I designed and hand painted a vintage truck silhouette on pallet wood and added some vintage sign letters that I found at a local barn sale. To add the garage feel, I covered the face of my kitchen peninsula in a light colored wood grain vinyl that I found at the dollar store. Two more elements that I incorporated to complete the garage feel was covering the counter top with silver wrapping paper and lining the edge with a diamond plated sticker vinyl and (last but not least) I took solo cups, poster board and hammered silver spray paint to create light covers that transformed my regular peninsula hanging lights into industrial barn style lights. The effect turned out even better than I had imagined. To carry the theme into other rooms, I took white panel board, painted it barn red, added a gray wash over top to give it a weathered look and added vintage metal signs to create a one-of-a-kind backdrop at the cake and hat station. One strike of genius that I HAVE to share…is that I created many of those metal signs myself for a couple of dollars (after I looked at a pizza tin for too long and had a light bulb go off over my head). Here’s what I did: I bought pizza tins from the dollar store, spray painted them black and others white.nThen I found circular vintage gasoline company logos online and printed them on regular card stock paper on my home printer. Cut them out, lined up the two halves and used double sided tape to attach them together and then glued the logo onto the backside surface of the pizza tin. The end result can be seen on the Texaco, Pennzoil, Mobil gas and Gulf signs that are displayed on the red panel boards. Those metal signs usually range from $20-$30 but I was able to achieve the same look for a fraction of that. I used the same baking tin idea to create the custom hanging sign that says “Blake’s Chevron Gasoline”. Additional DIY items worth mentioning are: Pinwheels I created myself using dollar store wrapping and craft paper; Printed oil can labels and affixed to large tomato cans; Made custom birthday hats by covering dollar store birthday hats with wrapping paper and then making small pinwheels and attaching to the front, along with a truck decal on top; Found wheel caps from chevy and ford and framed them in dollar store picture frames and covered the back with diamond plate sticker vinyl; Created and added decals (No. 1) to metal gas tank and (Garage Full Service with wrench detail) to old metal milk cooler; Created a vintage “ONE” banner for highchair using scrapbook paper, ribbon and thumb tacks; added poster board to sliding glass windows to create a garage door effect.”
