“This Christmas dessert table is inspired by the lovely sideboard I own with vintage hot air balloons painted on the drawers. I wanted the desserts to reflect the deep tones of the sideboard. I started with beautiful native Australian flowers. Sunshine yellow, Christmas tree green, and ruby red are the chosen colour scheme. These colors reflect the green and gold of our beautiful, sun-scorched Australian Summer.
Traditional Meets Aussie Design
As I began to build my design concept I realised that I was actually creating a Christmas dessert table that showcased our unique Australian climate and environment, rather than imitating a Northern Winter Christmas. Doing away with snowflakes and Frosty the Snowman, I included gum nuts, daisies and cherry topped cupcakes. Of course, there is a lot about a traditional Christmas that I could not part with. I used Tartan checked vintage tins and thermoses from my prop collection as decorations. Then, gingerbread deer cookies on top of a rustic spice naked cake gave the display a distinct woodland feel.
Minimalistic
I kept the decoration of the treats minimal by tying tartan ribbon and rosemary sprigs around the gingerbread men. A red velvet cake decorated with dried orange slices and star anise is the feature cake. As the display was set up in front of a gorgeous sunshine yellow wall, I kept the backdrop simple using two old window frames sourced from a second-hand shop. Tying three iced ginger cookies with ribbon, I hung them from one of the windows for added interest. This was a very simple dessert display that could easily be adapted to your own home and style.
