Monochromatic Carousel Birthday Party Details:
Bernadette’s party snippet- “Living in a small apartment in Brooklyn means having to look for an outside venue for celebrations with a big group of family and friends. For Georgias first birthday party, we chose Janes Carousel. As an artist, I love the history behind the hand painted horses and the Jean Nouvel setting. For Georgia, I wanted a first birthday theme that was timeless and classic. I kept this in mind while planning her decorations. There were going to be more adults than children at her party, so I wanted to keep the decor sophisticated and not overly thematic. Everything at the party was DIY and had to be done in line with the carousels rules. There were venue restrictions and having to transport/ pack items limited what we could do for the party. But it was also a good way to keep the party simple and focused on what was most important for a two hour event. Since I am very hands on creative, I made everything from the food, flower arrangements and decor. I wanted to put the money we saved on catering, etc. to go towards converting Georgias nursery to a toddlers room. The only outside item we ordered was big sheet cake from Ovenly, adorned with sprinkles and flowers that I placed that morning. The sheet cake was great as it is easier for people to cut themselves. The cake was the most colorful and everything else was either white, pale pink, grey or silver, with some yellow for brightness. It looked soft against the wintery day, colorful horses and pale green structure of the building. Luckily I have three sisters who helped me put together the party. Having a schedule helped and doing things in the days leading up instead of all in one day made it possible. We were finished prepping by Sunday morning and had plenty of time to relax and get ready for the party. We decided on an afternoon start time, so people could do their Sunday brunches and then come by afterward without rushing. Our food spread was a dips and dessert theme.
DIPS
Doing dips allowed us to prepare in advance but also was friendly for a wide range of people, from kids to adults with dietary restrictions. We made kale guacamole, a roasted scallion & chive dip and hummus. We served it with a big colorful crudité board, gluten-free crackers, tortilla and potato chips.
DESSERTS
Sheetcake: Ovenly Cakes: I baked a key lime pie, a vegan dark chocolate cake with pistachio & rose and a mini baby friendly cake with no sugar/dairy. Cookies: Choosing cookies that you could prepare the dough in advance was key for timing. I baked the cookies two days ahead of the party and as soon as they cooled sealed them in an airtight container. I made chocolate chunk shortbread, chocolate sables, classic shortbread dusted with raspberry and sugar cookies. Then, I stamped the sugar cookies with Fun to Be One lettering. I left baggies out and a little sign for people to take some home.
DRINKS
We filled a chic looking Coleman steel belted cooler with ice and several types of adult and baby friendly drinks.
FLORALS
I watched some basic youtube videos on how to do flower arranging. The day before the party I went to whole foods and spending only $35 got some amazing spring blooms – apricot blossoms branches, tulips, ranunculus, dusty miller and tiny white flowers for filling it all in. Cutlery/Napkins: Since there were 40 people attending, we opted for compostable cutlery (which comes in a beautiful natural tone), compostable plates and simple white napkins.” Vendors: Photography: Georgias dad Andrew Stinson Styling: Bernadette Marie Studio Florals: Bernadette Marie Studio Signage: Bernadette Marie Studio Paper Pom Poms: Etsy Banner: Meri Meri Carousel topper: Etsy Babys dress, shoes and cardigan: All Bonpoint Tablecloths: H&M Serveware: Mix of Muji and Ikea More carousel ideas with a touch of manliness: Carousel 1st Birthday Dessert Table Magical Carousel Birthday Party Love Kara’s Party Ideas?
