This adorable LITTLE MERMAID 5TH BIRTHDAY PARTY was submitted by Cecilia Coetzee of Little Red Balloon. This is such a darling party! I especially love the driftwood signs and mermaid fin costumes! I also love all of the cute cookies! This party is so sweet and has so many ideas that that would work perfectly for not only a mermaid party, but an Under the Sea party as well.

My favorite Little Mermaid party ideas and elements from this darling birthday celebration are:

The cute cake full of treasures inside The darling mermaid fin costumes The cute driftwood signs The cute under the sea cookies The fun messages in a bottle wrapped in twine The cute cupcake toppers and MORE!

Little Mermaid Party Details: This is what Cecilia said about planning/styling the party- “My 5 year old dreams about being a Mermaid. She is going to be a mermaid dentist .., a mermaid radiologist …. a mermaid teacher … a mermaid ice scater etc. But ‘mermaid’ is always in front of every occupation! Thus, since she saw ‘little Mermaid’ with Arial, this is the party she wanted for her 5th birthday party. We planned every little detail together. The difficult part came in when we had to decide what we are going to give to the boys, as she planned it very well that this boy would be Arial’s dad, and that boy would be Sebastian and that boy would be Flounder etc. And I told her that I would never be able to make them costumes. It is pretty easy making mermaid tails for all the girls, but the expectation to make Flounder and Sebastian .. I had to put a full stop there and then. It was then we decided on bringing in a little bit of ‘pirates’ into the party and give each boy a sword and eye pat ch. Then the idea came up to have a treasure box on the party as well filled with plastic coins, pearls etc. WAS THIS A HIT! the kids could not get enough of it! There was nothing left but sand. :-) The most funny thing was that the boys had the most fun with the pearls and the girls playing with the swords. I made each girl a mermaid tail and large pearl necklace. they loved it! The birthday girl, Ane, got a special ‘Arial’ mermaid costume. Everything made by me. I just have to mention that parties have been my LIFE since I was very small. I always made my own cakes .. and I believe in doing EVERYTHING yourself. I ordered the paper plates and name tags on the internet, and bought the party boxes from a Chinese Mall situated locally. I compiled everything together myself. The tables were made up by using ‘wooden pallets’ I got from work. This just worked so well with the theme. The ‘fish net’ I put over the main table was also made by myself. I got the instructions from the internet. Initially I wanted to bought a casting net but it was just too expensive,. so I made my own and how well it did not work out! I do not like the bubbles you buy in the party stores. So I took a little glass bottle, decorated it with rope and a sea-green pearl and it matched the theme! I used wire and bended it so that you can blow bubbles and pushed it into the cork of the bottle. As good as been bought in the store and it blew great bubbles. This also presented the idea of the ‘message in the bottle’ that is part of the ‘Little Mermaid’. My neighbor, Marese Herbst is a photographer and took a few great snapshots of the party. The rest of the photos I took with my samsung mobile phone. I decided to do something different with the cake. Each party always ended up with the cake, not being eaten. There is always a cake AND cupcakes.. and when the kids had their cupcake they are no longer interested in having some cake. (SO different from when we were kids! the cake was the highlight of the party! These days, the cake is a showoff and nothing more). So, I decided to make a cake from cookies. Each layer of cookies were put together with chocolate. The center was filled with smarties. We had such a laugh. It would have been best cutting the cake with a handsaw! The next time I build this cake I will make a chocolate smear and stick the cookies together with that. plain melted chocolate is just to hard when it hardens :-). Despite this, the cake was still well accepted and something different from the usual. Everything for this party (edibles, table cloths, pearly necklaces, mermaid tales and birthday girl’s costume) was made by Little Red Balloon (Cecilia Coetzee). What fun this party was”!
