Jungle Safari Party Details: This is what Heather said about styling and designing the party- “My daughter Gianah’s favorite song is Katy Perry’s Roar and so it was only natural to build her 4th birthday around the song that seemed to be her anthem! She has watched that video more times than I can even count and she knew she wanted lions and the opportunity to drive her motorized jeep with her friends… it seemed like a Safari was the way to go! We started with our invitations by Lovely Apple who was so generous to work with our orange, green and khaki color scheme and include excerpted songs lyrics on the back of our invitation. To make sure we had a LIon, I ordered vinyl safari animal decals from Janey Mac and had them enlarged so we could use them on our walls. We had a very large wall in our main party space we needed to fill (6 ft by 6 ft). Using paper plates, we covered and outlined the space. We placed an orange vinyl lion in the center with the letters “R-O-A-R”. It was an expensive way to decorate and I used painters tape to adhere the plates without damaging the walls. I knew we needed a “safari” vibe and so I started looking for ways to incorporate grasses that weren’t live but that wouldn’t look fake. I found some 12 x 12 grass mats and had wooden “crates” made to sit them in. I then placed our cupcakes on tiered stands and it added the natural element I was looking for. One of my favorite projects Gianah was able to help with, was our wooden trivets. We happened to have a maple tree die that needed to be taken down. I had my husband cut a couple of “slices” with his chainsaw. I baked them in the oven at the lowest heat for about 5 hours so they would dry out and kill off anything I couldn’t see! Next, I sanded them and Gianah helped me put a matte polyurethane coat on them. They turned out beautifully and I just can’t seem to put them away yet! I sprayed plastic animals with plastic safe paint and used them on our milk bottles with some burlap ribbon. Using the burlap in lime green and orange and some raffia was all that I needed to tie in other arrangements. I had a lot of spaces to decorate indoors and outside. I used cardboard signs throughout the party. To ensure they looked more like wood and not like cardboard, I tore the edges and burned them in some places to give them a weathered appearance. We also had cardboard cutouts of animals hidden around a trail for the kids to “hunt” while wearing their safari hats and canteens. And speaking of canteens, I couldn’t find anything I liked at an affordable price. Using a friend’s Cricut, I used vinyl (stickers) to cover the canteen labels and modified them to fit our theme. I found two great deals during my planning. One was some vinyl tablecloth like animal print fabric (normally $21/yd and I got for $7/yd). I saw it and knew I could make a “rug” out of it. The back had black felt. Using chalk, I outlined on one half the shape of rug. I then cut out just that half side, placed it on top of the other half and using chalk copied it so my outline was identical on both sides. It turned out great and we used it outdoors. My second steal was a chip and dip platter from Party City that I got for $2. I saw it and had no idea how I would use it but I liked the natural feel and espresso color. Later, we used it for our Safari Sundae station where I filled the center with sundae cups and placed ramekins filled with the toppings (where the chips would normally go). It was a huge hit with the kids! And the real show stopper was the cake fondant of course by Sugar and Stripes. I have used them many times before and sent them an awful drawing of what I was looking for. I wanted the cake to have silhouette animals to match all of our party printables. They nailed it and even delivered on my request to have chevron safari trees (to match our invitation). They suggested a compass option as one of our cupcake toppers and the kids loved them. The other real talent was Sweetartsweets who made gorgeous cookies that we used as party favors. The kids enjoyed the hunt, making their own safari sundaes, dancing to “Roar” and of course getting a ride in the safari jeep. It was a party that was memorable for all of the right reasons and it was a “roaring” good time”! Love Kara’s Party Ideas?
