This is what Kristen shared about the party- “Planning my daughters birthdays is probably one of my favorite things to do. This time around, the girls were turning 5 and 2 and we decided a Mexican-inspired Fiesta would be fun. Bright colors, yummy food, fun games, lively music whats not to love?!
Elena of Avalor Inspiration
A couple months into planning this party, my girls discovered the awesome Disney show, Elena of Avalor which features an adventurous, beautiful Latina princess and her friends and family. I drew a lot of the inspiration for the Fiesta from this show. For example, they had an episode where Elenas sister (Isabel) played throw the ball in the jaquins mouth so I designed and painted a Jaquin Ball Toss for the Fiesta. I also used some of the shows terminology when designing a sand table game for the younger kids. I used our old water table and buried Avalorian gold coins, cave crystals, and lava rock monster gems under sand for kids to dig out and it was a huge hit! Other games included authentic Mexican Loteria (BINGO), Elena of Avalor puzzles, and a custom-designed Fiesta Fun Sheet. We also had a tissue paper flower photo backdrop and a favor bar which featured Elena of Avalor prizes, candy, and handmade mini piñatas (which were filled with confetti, candy and a prize!). The mini pinatas were a labor of love but just so fun and unique! The most popular activity of the entire Fiesta was actually the paint-your-own maracas craft. All of the kids loved it and were proud to bring their creations home.
Delicious Food
For the food, we decided to feature DIY tacos and nachos. We offered a variety of meats: taco beef, taco ground turkey, fajita chicken, and carnitas. Plus, we also had hot cheese for the nachos, rice, beans, tomatoes, onions, shredded cheese, peppers, hot sauces, salsas and a bunch of other toppings. We had a huge selection of taco shells, chips and tortillas and many different beverages including Jarritos, lemonade, water, pop and juice. I bought plastic take-n-toss drink cups with lids for the kids to use for their beverages. They come in bright colors so they fit in with all of the other bright Fiesta decorations well!
Ambiance & Décor
For the ambiance & décor, the tissue paper flower photo backdrop doubled as a decorative wall with papel picado banners hung from the sides of it over the sweets and favor tables. Brightly colored tablecloths were used on all of the tables, and colorful floral arrangements accented the tables as well. Mexican sugar molds were filled with succulents and used as some of the centerpieces for the dining tables along with a collection of decorative tea tins, grapewood branches, and brightly colored glassware. The mini cupcakes were topped with paper flowers (designed by RBK Creations), mini Mexican flags, glittery gold crowns, and Elena of Avalor ring cupcake toppers. Additionally, I designed a lot of fun signage for the partythis included directional signage leading guests to the correct parking lot and shelter for the event, food signs, and instructional signage. I also did watercolor Otomi-inspired designs for the invitations, which featured my own rendition of Jaquins (the flying jaguar creatures from Elena of Avalor) as well as a bunch of flowers and flourishes. Additionally, I used some of the invitation watercolor artwork on the signs as well to tie everything together. I also found some cute scrapbooking sticker embellishments (tiny piñatas, cacti, and bright flowers) which I used to enhance the small wooden chalkboard food signs. To add to the ambiance, we had Mexican + Latina music playing for the duration of the Fiesta.
Fiesta Details
The birthday girls wore bright crepe-textured dresses that I found at Target. They had a Fiesta-feel to them but needed a little extra pop to really look the part. Vivians red dress was accented with a felt-floral belt designed by RBK Creations. RBK also made accessories for birthday girl Arias hair and their baby sister Maddies head as well. They all looked adorable! I loved planning this Fiesta birthday for my girls. It is fun and rewarding to use my creativity to make my girls exceedingly happy! I already have ideas for next year”!
